Stir It Up site a good resource for student activists

stiritup_logoIn the tradition of Students’ against Sweatshops, Unite Here, in conjunction with SEIU and Service Workers United, has launched Stir it Up, an online resource for student activists who are taking on campus administrators and subcontractors to improve working conditions for low wage campus workers.

The website’s Data and Resources page provides students with a growing database of food service contracts and models of responsible contracting. The site offers students campaign tools needed to win fair wages, contractor codes of conduct that benefit campus workers, and neutrality agreements that allow workers the freedom to form unions.

Stir it Up blogger Ian Mikusko, describes Stir it Up as “. . . a website dedicated to helping students across the country take a stand and demand that their campus food service reflects the values of the students on campus. Too often administrators who oversee campus food service make decisions without any real input from the student body. Food service at college campuses and across the industry needs to change, and if that change is going to take place, it’s going to be because of student activism and involvement.”
