The U.S. and 10 other countries are negotiating our next big trade agreement, called TPP. It’s time to re-examine what works and what doesn’t work.

Imagine a thought experiment, where we put environmentalists in each country in charge of negotiating the next trade agreement. Preposterous! I know. Stick with me. This is a thought experiment.

So, in this thought experiment our environmental negotiators would prioritize their interests — CO2 in the atmosphere, deforestation, endangered species, renewable energy, safe food, clean air and clean water.

Savage Repression Unleashed on Honduran Labor

The perpetrators of the recent right-wing coup in Honduras will stop at nothing to maintain their control of the country. Their latest outrage was a massive armed police and military assault against thousands of peaceful demonstrators in Tegucigalpa. A teacher, Roger Vallejo Soriana was shot in the head and lies in a coma. Dozens of other union demonstrators were wounded, beaten and arrested. In the photograph, Carlos Reyes, a leader of the STIBYS beverage workers’ union, hospitalized with ten stitches in his head and a broken arm, is being interviewed following his arrest.

Reyes and other members of STIBYS narrowly escaped death on the day before when a bomb blasted their union office fifteen minutes after the end of a union meeting. The explosives could have been planted with police contrivance, since during the meeting the office was surrounded by a police cordon. Reyes has pointed out that the coup’s head of state security, Billy Joya, was involved in disappearances and human rights violations of labor activists in the 1980s.
