DSA at the US Social Forum

Democratic Socialists of America is participating in the U.S. Social Forum this June 22-26 in Detroit, Michigan. At least ten thousand activists from all around the country are expected to participate.  We are organizing sessions on the economic crisis, the mortgage crisis, and socialism in the 21st Century. Young Democratic Socialists are also organizing sessions at the conference.

Additionally we will be hosting an ice cream reception for DSA members and friends in the labor tent on Friday, June 25th.  UAW Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Bunn, and DSA Honorary Chair Frances Fox Piven are two of the DSA speakers at the Social Forum.

Program at the Social Forum

DSA and YDS are organizing five workshops and a reception. We expect that most of them will be on Thursday the 24th or Friday the 25th of June, but we will not know for sure until the Social Forum releases the final schedule in June.

Here are the sessions we are organizing:

We expect our reception at the labor tent to be from 3-6 PM on Friday the 25th. A complete list of the featured guests will be available shortly.

A complete list of the 1400 proposed workshops is available on the Social Forum Web Site.

DSA encourages attendance at the Social Forum. We know that many DSA members attended the Atlanta Social Forum, but because it was so large, with so many interesting sessions, not every member was able to find out about our sessions. We hope that any member who is attending or thinking about attending will let us know so that we can keep members and friends posted about DSA at the Social Forum. Click here to let DS national director Frank Llewellyn know that you are attending the U.S. Social Forum in Detroit, if you have a place to stay and especially if you will be staying at the Comfort Inn  or the Fairfield Suites Inn.

Housing for the U.S. Social Forum

Convenient and inexpensive housing for the Social Forum is not so easy to find. The Social Forum is constantly working to provide housing alternatives. There is an extensive hotel list on their web site. However by now many of the room blocks are sold out or only available for nights early in the week. When I checked earlier this evening I could only find one hotel that said they still had rooms available for the weekend:

Motor City Casino Hotel
2901 Grand River
Detroit, MI 48201
Rate: $109 per night (mention the Social Forum to get this rate)

This hotel is 10 minutes by car from Cobo Hall and Hart Plaza where the Social Forum will be located.
In order to facilitate DSA members attendance we have selected two hotels located next to each other in the Farmington Hills area that have rooms at reasonable prices available.  If needed we will help you find a member to share the room, further reducing your cost.
Fairfield Inn & Suites Detroit Farmington Hills
27777 Stansbury Boulevard
Farmington Hills, Michigan 48334 USA
Phone:  1-248-442-9800
They offer a $69 per night non-refundable rate for one or two persons (plus tax). It must be purchased at least ten days in advance of your stay. It is not necessary to mention DSA as it is a standard rate, but it would not hurt to let them know you are with the DSA group.

Comfort Inn

30715 West 12 Mile Road
Farmington Hills, MI 48334
(248) 471-9220

The also offer a $69 rate, however you will have to mention DSA to get the rate.

Both hotels include continental breakfasts, free parking and free internet in their rates. Both have good reputations. Neither is a full service hotel with a restaurant or bar. There are restaurants nearby and both hotels allow food delivery. The hotels are about a twenty-five minute drive from Cobo Hall and Hart Plaza. DSA will organize car pools to and from the Social Forum in the morning and the evening. Both hotels are right off the freeway.
