Bold Plan to Tackle Wage Theft to be Unveiled – at the Department of Labor

The Labor Department will be the site of a Wednesday press conference for major new book on the rampant practice of wage theft – “the crime wave no one talks about” – and what the new administration should do to stop it.

Kim Bobo, the Executive Director of the organization Interfaith Worker Justice, will discuss her hard-hitting new book Wage Theft in America: Why Millions of Working Americans Are Not Getting Paid – And What We Can Do About It at a press conference inside the Department of Labor (DOL) this Wednesday, November 12, at 12:00 p.m.

Kim Bobo has written an excellent and informative book on one of the most pressing issues facing millions of hardworking Americans,” says Senator Edward M. Kennedy. “She offers bold, practical, and progressive solutions for how policymakers and advocates can end the growing crisis of wage theft in America.”

The event was organized by members of the American Federation of Government Employees on staff at the DOL (AFGE Local 12). Bobo’s efforts to combat wage theft came to national attention in July when she testified at the House Education and Labor Committee’s hearing “Is the Department of Labor Effectively Enforcing Our Wage and Hour Laws?”

WHAT: Press Conference on the Crisis of Wage Theft and What the DOL Needs to Do to Tackle It

WHO:Kim Bobo, Executive Director of Interfaith Worker Justice and the author of Wage Theft in America
WHERE:

U.S. Department of Labor – Frances Perkins Building, 200 Constitution Ave. NW – North Conference Rooms N4437-A & B (4th floor)

WHEN:Wednesday November 12, 12:00 PM
WHY:

In what has been described as “the crime wave no one talks about,” billions of dollars worth of wages are stolen from millions of workers in the United States every year. The scope of these abuses is as staggering as it is wrong – paying employees far less than the legal minimum wage, purposefully misclassifying employees as independent contractors, illegally denying workers overtime pay – and only now are people beginning to take notice. Kim Bobo’s major new book Wage Theft in America offers a sweeping analysis of the crisis and provides concrete solutions, with special attention to what the new presidential administration should do about the problem.

Bobo will be in Washington Tuesday, November 11 through Saturday, November 15, discussing her book at several venues. If you would like to arrange an interview with her while she’s there, please contact Danny Postel at (312) 513-8489, dpostel@iwj.org.
